Overview
The Just Transition Fund works to create inclusive economic opportunities for communities and workers hit hardest by the transition away from coal. Even prior to the pandemic, coal communities across the country were experiencing significant economic distress, as closures threaten economic stability by eroding the tax base and crippling local governments. COVID-19 has exacerbated all these stressors. A growing priority is to ensure national strategies, including economic recovery, are designed to directly alleviate economic distress in transitioning coal communities, act as a blueprint for transitioning oil and gas communities, and build support for durable climate policy in hard-hit areas.
