Overview
Community Music Center provides musical instruction to learners of all ages. The center, located in San Francisco’s Mission District, offers lessons in more than 30 instruments, voice instruction, and advanced training in theory and musicianship to 2,000 students, along with several community choruses in isolated elder communities, and an in-school mariachi program. Through its slate of programs and public performances, the organization reaches more than 15,000 people each year. This grant to Community Music Center advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy by supporting a community hub for music learning that values accessibility and equity in a rapidly gentrifying part of the Bay Area.

Community Music Center is a music school that serves learners of all ages from its main campus in San Francisco’s Mission District, its satellite campus in the Richmond District, and in partnerships with public schools and other institutions. It provides private instruction on 30 instruments, group and ensemble classes, public performances, and many special programs in response to community interests. In total, it serves over 3,300 students each year. Support for Community Music Center aligns with the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.

The Community Music Center has a historic, ninety-one-year-old mission to make music accessible to everyone. At its home in San Francisco’s Mission District, as well as in a Richmond District branch, the Center offers a comprehensive slate of music lessons in thirty instruments, including voice; more than fifty ensemble classes; advanced training in theory and musicianship to more than 2,400 students of all ages; and public performances for 18,500 people. Nearly 70 percent of the students received financial aid. With its first new executive director in thirty-three years, and a new five-year strategic plan, the organization is poised to build on its strong foundation to continue to deliver quality community arts education.
