United Nations Population Fund

For Support Of UNFPA's Advocacy Program

Overview
The mission of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is to promote the right of every woman, man, and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programs to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. Engaged in programs in over 150 countries, UNFPA also undertakes advocacy and fundraising efforts to (1) foster an enabling environment that will encourage both donor and developing countries to implement the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development and (2) mobilize resources to finance population and sexual and reproductive health programs in developing countries. This recommended funding would help strengthen UNFPA's advocacy efforts, including its collaborations with partners in key donor countries to improve funding for the programs it promotes. As of January 1, 2011, UNFPA has a new executive director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin. Under his leadership, the organization will strive to generate stronger results in its core areas: population and development, reproductive health and rights, and women's empowerment and gender equality.
