Overview
Over the last decade, student access to non-tested subjects such as the arts and history has declined, particularly at schools located in low-income communities. The smash Broadway musical "Hamilton" offers a rare entry point for many students into both of these subjects. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has designed an educational program to complement the play, which will travel to San Francisco in 2017. This grant would help Gilder Lehrman deeply engage 8,000 Bay Area students from Title I high schools in learning about American history through performance poetry, and provide those students with an opportunity to see one of the most significant pieces of American theater in recent memory.
