Overview
In 2013, the Aspen Institute launched a new venture, the Franklin Project, to build a case for a voluntary civilian service counterpart to military service in the United States. The Project seeks to make "a year of full-time national service a cultural expectation, common opportunity, and civic rite of passage for every young American." In addition to mobilizing public and political support for such an effort, the project is working with nonprofit leaders, representatives from local, state, and national governments, universities, and major US employers to help establish full-time service year positions within their organizations. The Project aims to create 30,000 new service year positions by 2017, and eventually reach a total of 1 million existing and new positions by 2023.

for support of the Urban District Leadership Network
The Urban District Leadership Network is a learning community that supports senior leaders from nationwide urban bellwether districts in improving student learning conditions and experiences through thoughtful transformation of complex district systems. The network promotes learning, inspiration, reflection, and collaboration around efforts such as encouraging systemic coherence and the reorientation of school systems to student needs, experiences, and identities. It invites system leaders and researchers into conversation to address the gap between research and practice. This grant supports convening superintendents and their chief officers as they work to execute and sustain a rich, modern vision for the success of today’s students that is grounded in research and informed by practice — and that sees learners in their full humanity and potential.
