Jeff Morshed

Strategy Officer, Effective Philanthropy Group

Jeff Morshed is the Strategy Officer in the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Effective Philanthropy Group. The team guides strategy, evaluation, and programmatic learning within the Hewlett Foundation and also leads grantmaking to support grantee organizational effectiveness and a strong philanthropic sector. Jeff supports staff across all program areas to develop and refresh strategies, updates and implements guidance related to Hewlett’s approach to philanthropy, and identifies cross-program learning opportunities related to strategy.

Jeff brings a diverse set of experiences in strategy development in the social impact space. Most recently, he served as the Strategy and Learning Manager for the Just and Inclusive Society Program at Democracy Fund, where he supported the organization and program teams in creating and implementing strategies in service of an open, inclusive, and multi-racial democracy. Prior to that, Jeff was a management consultant at Deloitte, where he helped public and private sector entities in the United States, Europe, and Middle East Gulf build socio-economic development strategies related to transportation, labor, and governance. He also joined the Monitor Institute, a social impact think-tank and consultancy within Deloitte, where he advised nonprofit, philanthropic, and higher education institutions on strategy and operations. Jeff started his career as a 5th grade history teacher in Newark, New Jersey through Teach for America. He also worked in nonprofits, supporting Teach for America’s campus recruitment initiative at Georgetown University and the International Crisis Group’s United Nations advocacy efforts.

Jeff has an M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University, B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, and teaching certification from the Relay Graduate School of Education. He is a co-author of “What’s Next for Philanthropy in the 2020s: Seeing Philanthropy in a New Light,” a field-wide innovation initiative studying the current state and future of philanthropic giving in North America. He also co-authored “Winner Takes All: The Race to Adopt An Integrated Approach to Work Creation in the Future Age of Work” about the importance of using systems thinking approaches to shape strategies and interventions in the labor market.
