Thomas C. Schroeder, an attorney who is an expert on the laws governing foundations and charities, has been named associate general counsel for The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Foundation officials announced today.
Since 2006, Schroeder has worked as an associate attorney at the law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, in Seattle, Washington, where his practice focused exclusively on advising charitable and other tax-exempt organizations. He will join the Hewlett Foundation on November 28.
At the Foundation, he will have a wide range of duties, including advising the staff; assuring compliance with state, federal, and international laws; and developing internal policies and staff training.
“Tom’s legal background makes him the ideal candidate to join the Foundation’s legal team,” said Hewlett Foundation General Counsel Elizabeth Peters. “He understands the nonprofit world, both from a legal perspective and as someone who has worked in it himself in a variety of settings. We look forward to availing ourselves of his skills and perspective.”
In 1995 and 1996, Schroeder was an assistant in the department of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He also worked as a project coordinator and project manager at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle—from 1996 to 1999 in the Biobehavioral Sciences Group, and from 2000 to 2003 in the Translational Outcomes Research Group.
Schroeder received a bachelor of arts degree in art history and English literature from Bowdoin College in 1995, a master’s degree in the history of art from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 2000, and a law degree from the University of Washington School of Law in 2006.
