Pratham is India’s largest nonprofit organization working to support primary education throughout that country. With a grant from the Hewlett Foundation, Pratham in 2007 launched Read India, a program that works to improve the quality of primary school education to ensure that students throughout the country master basic math and reading skills. To date, more than 33 million children in tens of thousands of villages across nineteen states have taken part in Read India’s program. Pratham estimates that in the five states where Read India has been most successful, its work has resulted in about 10 million children learning to read. The grant to Pratham is part of a unique partnership between Hewlett and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the quality of education among primary education students in sub-Saharan Africa and India.
