Colleagues,

I’m writing to you to let you know about a forthcoming change at the Hewlett Foundation and for me personally. Next summer I will turn 72, the age at which Hewlett Board members (including the president) have traditionally retired. After twelve years as president, I am planning to leave the Foundation to return to teaching.

A Board search committee has been formed. The committee is composed of Byron Auguste, Walter Hewlett, Mary Jaffe, Rick Levin, and Steve Neal as Chair. The committee has asked Susan Bell to serve as Deputy Chair of the search, with the balance of her time continuing in her role as Vice President.

We anticipate that the search will conclude sometime in the first half of next year and that it may take some time after that for a new president to take office. I will remain president until then and look forward to working with colleagues inside and outside the Foundation on new and continuing initiatives.

Sincerely,

Paul Brest
