Overview
Based in San Francisco’s Mission District, Z Space has earned national recognition as a home for the development of new performance works. The organization reaches nearly 22,000 people each year through a variety of programs, including New Work, which supports artists and ensembles from conception to realization of unique works; Word for Word, a resident theater company that transforms works of literature verbatim to the stage; Youth Arts, an arts education program promoting literacy and creativity; and the subsidized rental program, which opens Z Space’s two venues for use by a variety of other arts groups.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
Z Space is dedicated to creating, developing, and presenting new performances, often in collaboration with artists, ensembles, and organizations. Z Space presents and coproduces works of theater, dance, and storytelling. It also promotes youth self-expression and literacy through arts education programs that bring works of fiction to the stage verbatim. In a typical year, Z Space provides dozens of diverse ensembles and organizations with subsidized access to its two San Francisco theater spaces and serves more than 20,000 people. This grant to Z Space advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.
