Overview
Wikipedia, run by the Wikimedia Foundation, is one of the largest OER communities in existence. With more than 300 million unique visitors each month, Wikipedia is the fifth most popular Web site in the world, after Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Facebook. Its enormous content repository includes 4.3 million freely licensed multimedia files and more than 12 million articles in 265 languages, contributed by a volunteer force of 150,000 Wikipedians. Over the next two years, the Wikimedia Foundation will develop a model of how to use Wikipedia as a teaching tool in the classroom, continue to expand Wikipedia's global reach, and create new offline products and partnerships with the capacity to distribute offline versions of Wikimedia's products to users with limited connectivity at low cost.
