Overview
Preliminary small studies of thirty women suggest that the hormonal IUD may be a highly effective emergency contraceptive (EC) method, more effective than EC pills, particularly for obese women. This project will use a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of the Levonorgestrel intrauterine system as an EC method. Participants in the study will be followed for six to twelve months to measure rates of unintended pregnancy. The research will be conducted through the Division of Clinical Research in the OB/GYN Department of Washington University in St. Louis, the facility that conducted the recent Contraceptive CHOICE Project, a study of nearly 10,000 women and long-acting reversible contraceptives.
