Overview
Vital Arts is an Oakland-based organization that serves and advocates for Bay Area artists. It was created to honor the victims of the 2016 Ghost Ship fire and to address the problems that contributed to the fire, which happened in a converted warehouse, by meeting the needs of low-income artists in the Bay Area. Its programs include incubation of new efforts such as the Artist Space Trust and Artist Displacement Prevention Grant program, as well as multiple forms of knowledge sharing to ensure artists can access the financial and legal resources that are available to them. This grant will support the Bay Area Artist Census, a project of Vital Arts, which works to improve stakeholder understanding of the key issues that impact artists’ creative agency and economic well-being. This grant advances the Performing Arts Program’s Artists strategy.
