Overview
Bristol Bay in southwest Alaska is home to the largest wild salmon population in the world and supports a thriving fishing industry and centuries-old Native American villages. The proposed Pebble gold mine at the headwaters of Bristol Bay would be the largest open pit mining operation in the world. Heavy metals leaching from the mine would likely cause irreversible damage to the region’s salmon fisheries as well as the economy and way of life dependent on them. This grant would support Trout Unlimited, a national fisheries conservation organization, in its efforts to stop the proposed mine.
