Overview
Theatre Rhinoceros is a theater company that has dedicated itself to presenting LGBT+ stories on stage. Each year, Theatre Rhinoceros presents a five-show home season of both familiar and new LGBT+ plays. In a typical year, the organization serves about 10,000 audience members. Theatre Rhinoceros is the longest-running LGBT+ theater in the United States, presenting work since 1977. This grant will help the organization hire a consultant to take the staff, board, and stakeholders through a strategic planning process driven by considerations of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The organization will also chart a future course for office and performance space, and address questions of financial growth and stability.

Theatre Rhinoceros develops and produces theater that represents the diversity of LGBTQ+ communities. Theatre Rhinoceros produces LGBTQ+ stories that encourage and empower artists and audience members to fight for a more just and equitable world. In a typical year, the organization presents a season of fully staged plays, staged readings, and hybrid live and online performances for about 1,300 audience members each year at their 700 square foot studio theater in the Castro. This organizational effectiveness grant will support Theatre Rhinoceros in its efforts to secure a larger, permanent facility, and advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.

For more than 5,000 audience members each year, Theatre Rhinoceros presents works that highlight the resilience, defiance, and wit of LGBTQ artists and communities in the face of historic and current marginalization. The organization presents a season of six fully staged plays, including an outdoor production at the Yerba Buena Gardens, along with staged readings and pop-up performances.
