Overview
Founded in 1978, Theatre of Yugen (San Francisco, CA) is the only company in the United States that creates original, experimental work through a collaborative process that is drawn from traditional Japanese theater forms—primarily the 700-year-old Noh (tragedy) and Kyogen (comedy)—resulting in new works that integrate Japanese techniques with those of other cultures. Its core ensemble consists of eight members, highly trained in the tradition of Noh and Kyogen, who often collaborate with artists from other disciplines and traditions. In addition to staging seventy performances of twenty productions annually, Yugen also presents emerging Bay Area artists and artists visiting from Japan, and offers low-cost rental fees for its venue, NOHspace, to local Asian and Asian American performing groups. With an OE grant Theatre of Yugen will hire the consulting firm of Wolf/Brown to conduct a series of stakeholder interviews and focus group sessions with company members to build a strategic plan for the organization. ($15,000/1 - 100% of project budget)
