Overview
A grant to The Matthew Harris Ornstein Memorial Foundation will support the production of a documentary by Found Object Films, based on a landmark criminal justice reform program. Created and spearheaded by visionary judge Steve Leifman, the program has transformed the way the criminal justice system deals with people suffering from serious mental illness, finding ways to save lives and preserve resources. The two core parts to the program include (a) police training in Crisis Intervention Team policing and (b) a robust pretrial diversion program for individuals with mental illness. The documentary is scheduled to be on public broadcasting in April 2020.
