Overview
As an affinity group for information technology, grants management, and communication staff at foundations across the U.S., Technology Affinity Group (TAG) aims to improve grantmaking by sharing relevant technology research, coordinating vendor and partner networks, and sharing benchmarking data. Through its Simplify Initiative, TAG is leveraging its networking power to educate technology leaders and increase awareness about data standards, projects, and tools that can help improve grantmaking efficiency and effectiveness. During the grant term, TAG will build an online knowledge center, conduct an awareness campaign, and provide direct outreach to grantmakers to educate and encourage them to adopt standards and tools they might not know about otherwise.

Grants to this Grantee
for the common grantee database and open data standard
Today, nonprofits must repeatedly provide the same information to apply for grants from different funders. Previous efforts to address this problem have focused on creating a common grant application, an approach that has been slow to catch on, given funders’ differing approaches to grantmaking. This new project takes a different approach, creating a common repository of data about nonprofits and then using Web services to bring this information into foundations’ grants management systems. The project does not require foundations to agree on a common format for their proposals—instead they simply pull relevant data as needed. The project draws on existing nonprofit profiles on GuideStar Exchange, thereby minimizing additional effort on the part of nonprofits.
