Overview
Digital disinformation in the U.S. 2016 campaigns—including misinformation campaigns, cyber attacks, news market polarization, and the wide distribution of false reporting on social media—weakened confidence in the integrity of U.S. democratic elections. European actors faced similar disruptions in the lead-up to the German elections of September 2017. Empirically, still relatively little is known about fake news—where it comes from, how it spreads, and how much it matters. This project will continue to analyze the impact these disruptions had on the democratic marketplace of ideas in Germany and translate findings back to the U.S. and elsewhere to inform subsequent election cycles.
