Overview
A grant to the Hoover Institution at Stanford University (Stanford, CA) would provide ongoing support to former Secretary of State George Shultz's Toward a World Free of Nuclear Weapons Project.Secretary Shultz has been the instigator and inspiration for the now worldwide interest in reestablishing the vision of and taking steps toward significant reductions in global nuclear arsenals and ultimately their elimination. In the coming year, Secretary Shultz, renowned physicist Sidney Drell, and Ambassador James Goodby will continue to provide the credibility and nonpartisan stamp to this effort that the Obama administration continues to need in order to ratify treaties and retain international support and confidence. The Hoover Institution is likely to play a particularly important role in negotiations with Senators Lugar and McCain regarding the Test Ban and with the Kremlin in negotiations on further reductions beyond those likely to be agreed upon in the upcoming treaty between the U.S. and Russia. Stanford University's Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) bridges the worlds of scholarship and practice to understand and foster the conditions for effective representative governance; promote balanced and sustainable economic growth; and establish the rule of law. Its faculty, researchers, and students analyze the ways in which democracy and development are challenged by authoritarian resurgence, misinformation, and the perils of a changing climate. This grant supports the center’s workshop on Protecting and Reforming the U.S. Civil Service.

The Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society is an interdisciplinary research center for students, scholars, and practitioners to actively examine, debate, and critique the interaction between philanthropy and civil society and help inform public opinion, policies, and professional practices to advance the public good. It is also home to the Stanford Social Innovation Review, one of the social sector’s preeminent magazines and online journals.
