Overview
Silicon Valley Community Foundation is a leading voice and catalyst for innovative solutions to the region's most challenging problems. The community foundation was created in 2006 through the landmark merger of Peninsula Community Foundation and Community Foundation Silicon Valley and launched in January 2007. Since 1993, the community foundation has partnered with local newspapers on the Peninsula through the Holiday Fund. Newspapers involved in the 2007 Holiday Fund include The Almanac, The Mountain View Voice, The Pacifica Tribune, and the Palo Alto Weekly.
The Holiday Fund works to support key local non-profits, stimulate growth of philanthropy on the Peninsula and increase visibility of local nonprofit organizations. The objectives of the Holiday Fund are 1) to provide unrestricted operating support to key local non-profits, 2) to stimulate giving by new donors and encourage the growth of philanthropy on the Peninsula and 3) to increase the visibility of local nonprofit organizations to the newspaper readership through both Holiday Fund advertising and articles about local non profits. (Renewal, $50,000/1)

Grants to this Grantee
for strengthening Latinx‐led or serving orgs by investing in capacity and leadership activities
Silicon Valley Community Foundation is a leading connector and collaborator in the region. This grant will support targeted, long-term investments for Silicon Valley’s nonprofits that serve Latinx communities or have Latinx leadership. This grant will contribute to sustaining investments and resources to eradicate systemic and institutional racism.
for support of the Regional Planning Strategy
As part of the Great Communities Collaborative, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation will work to change the current sprawl approach to development which negatively impacts underserved communities both economically and environmentally. The organization will focus on San Jose’s Diridon Station area, where there is an opportunity to merge better transit with affordable housing and good jobs as part of the redevelopment of the area. The long-term goal of the Collaborative is to change the trajectory of growth in the Bay Area by having half of the new homes built by 2030 be in walkable communities; at affordable prices; near transit, services, and jobs; and with access to recreation and open space.
for support of Silicon Valley Gives, a 2014 fundraising drive for Bay Area nonprofits
Silicon Valley Gives is an effort, spearheaded by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, to launch a 24-hour online giving event in 2014 to encourage broad donor support of local Silicon Valley nonprofits. A series of matches and prizes will be offered to help incentivize donor participation. The Silicon Valley project marks one example of a national effort overseen by the Council on Foundations to honor the 100th birthday of community foundations - on May 6, 2014 community foundations across the country will participate. In preparation, SVCF will offer a series of targeted trainings to help strengthen the capacity of local nonprofits to promote themselves through social media and other online methods. Silicon Valley Gives will then leverage and expand on the broader national marketing effort to bring attention to the local role of community foundations and to drive support to local nonprofits, focusing on San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
