Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
The San Francisco Symphony is widely recognized as one of the top orchestras in the United States. Each year, the organization reaches more than 450,000 people through a variety of programs, including a mainstage concert season, community engagement series, and educational offerings that reach every child in grades one through five in the San Francisco Unified School District. The Symphony recently hired a new executive director, and, with the announcement of longtime music director Michael Tilson Thomas’ 2020 retirement, will engage in a search for a new music director during the upcoming grant period. In addition, the organization will continue to explore new program formats to attract younger audiences and implement new strategies to increase long-term financial stability.
for general operating support
Each year, San Francisco Symphony presents more than 230 concerts, which reach 500,000 people. Its extensive music education programs provide more than 25,000 students and families, including every San Francisco public school student in the first through fifth grades, with music and instrument instruction. Nationally and internationally, the Symphony reaches another 2 million through touring, recording, and broadcasts on radio, television, and the internet. Renewed funding would support the Symphony’s efforts to continue music education programs for K-12 students, sustain music-making opportunities for adults, and commence a series of audience development initiatives including enhanced programs.
