For A Donor Collaborative To Increase Foundation Openness

Overview
Fund for Shared Insight is a funder collaborative focused on increasing foundation openness in service of greater effectiveness. This includes foundations sharing more openly about their work, as well as being more open to what others have to share with us, especially feedback data from the people we seek to help. Shared Insight has seven core funders who collectively contribute $6 million/year to a pooled fund at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. The funders have agreed to work together for at least three years (mid-2014–17). Additional "sidecar" funders have joined on specific grants as well. In 2014, Shared Insight made fourteen grants totaling $5.26 million. We are committed to rigorous measurement and sharing what we learn. Effective Philanthropy Group Director Fay Twersky was the leader in getting this collaborative started and serves as a co-chair of the initiative along with Ford Foundation Vice President Hilary Pennington. The six other core funders are the Ford Foundation, JPB Foundation, Liquidnet, the Packard Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the Rita Allen Foundation. We also had two funders agree to provide "sidecar" funding for two specific year one grants: The James Irvine Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

for the Fund for Shared Insight donor collaborative
Fund for Shared Insight is a funder collaborative. Our goal is that funders and nonprofits would be meaningfully more connected to each other, and to the people and communities we seek to help – and more responsive to their input and feedback. Shared Insight has grown since its inception four years ago. Today it includes 13 core funders and 65 additional funders who collectively contribute roughly $8 million each year (on average) to a pooled fund at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. To date, the fund has made 184 grants to 182 organizations totaling $21.1 million and is committed to rigorous measurement and sharing what it learns.
