Oxfam America

For Strengthening Women's Participation In Social Accountability In The Extractive Sectors

Overview
Oxfam America will continue to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations to incorporate women’s rights in the accountability agendas related to extractive industries. It will also focus on demanding greater accountability for the budgeting and use of mining revenues and government investments in programs and services that are responsive to women’s needs. Oxfam will document the gender impact of extractive industries to inform advocacy agendas at the local, regional, and global level, ensuring women’s rights organizations participate in decision making about extractive industries transparency. Oxfam America will convene a global learning event to share lessons with key stakeholders, including other international organizations, in-country partners, and global norm-setting platforms.

Grants to this Grantee
for an Oxfam South Africa program to advance transparency and participation in extractive industries
Oxfam America will provide funding to Oxfam South Africa (OZA) to address natural resource governance challenges in southern Africa. With this support, OZA will embark on community mobilization and education to facilitate effective implementation of policies designed to deepen corporate and government responsiveness and accountability in the extractives sector. OZA will also mobilize civil society groups and communities to advocate for the formalization of artisanal mining and to participate actively in setting the terms of engagement in extractive processes including environmental impact assessments, social labor planning, and corporate social responsibility.
for Oxfam Novib's Voice initiative
Oxfam America will provide funding to Oxfam Novib to support the Voice initiative, which promotes inclusive governance across 10 countries in Africa and Asia. Under the Voice initiative, Oxfam Novib will partner with the Transparency and Accountability Initiative, a donor collaborative, to support efforts by community-based organizations that seek to increase access of people who are marginalized and discriminated against, notably persons with disabilities, to the decision-making processes on how government revenues are allocated and spent.
