Overview
The Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) was created more than ten years ago as a membership organization of nonprofit technology professionals. Through its many educational programs, publications, on-line community, and its annual conference NTEN helps non-profits use technology more effectively in order to meet community needs and fulfill their missions. This OE grant will fund the exploration of a potential strategic partnership between NTEN and Idealware, another Hewlett grantee that helps non-profits make better use of technology. The goals of such a merger would be to increase impact through programmatic synergies, to improve operational efficiency, and to ensure sustainability for both organizations.

Grants to this Grantee
for conference scholarships for employees of Bay Area nonprofit arts organizations
Nonprofit Technology Network, known as NTEN, is a membership organization of nonprofit technology professionals who share the common goal of helping nonprofits use all aspects of technology more effectively. This grant enables NTEN to provide support for employees of Bay Area nonprofit arts organizations to attend the Capacity Interactive Boot Camp in November 2022. This work supports the Performing Arts Program’s overall strategic framework.
for improving NTEN's online IT benchmarking tool for nonprofits
The NonProfit Technology Network (NTEN) strives to help its members use technology strategically to achieve greater social impact. In addition to connecting its members to each other and providing professional development opportunities, NTEN also conducts research on technology issues impacting the nonprofit community and develops tools to help its members make important decisions about their work. With Hewlett Foundation support in 2011, NTEN built the Nonprofit Technology Benchmarking Tool to help its members assess their staffing and budgets in relation to other nonprofits. Since then, users have requested more advanced features that would provide recommendations and next steps. This grant will support these enhancements to the benchmarking tool.
for improved data reporting from the Nonprofit IT Staffing and Spending survey
Technology offers opportunities for organizations to engage stakeholders and serve clients, yet it often is viewed as an administrative cost rather than an integral part of meeting an organization’s mission. Nonprofit Technology Network is a membership organization of nonprofit technology professionals that strives to use technology more effectively to meet community needs and fulfill their missions. For the last five years, it has produced the Nonprofit IT Staffing and Spending survey to chronicle how organizations in the nonprofit sector invest in technology. This year, the organization plans to update the survey to make the information more actionable. It will build an interactive online benchmarking tool and create data visualizations that make clearer the connection between technology and an organization’s success. This tool is an important element of a new strategy that places a focus on creating change in nonprofit organizations, in contrast to providing support to IT professionals within nonprofit organizations.
