Overview
The Western Energy Project, a project of the New Venture Fund, was created in 2009 to protect fragile public lands in the West threatened by fossil energy leasing and development. The three goals of this proposed renewal grant are (1) to ensure the U.S. Department of the Interior implements on-the-ground fossil energy leasing reforms that will protect millions of acres of fragile lands, (2) to secure adoption of a public lands oil shale plan that protects one million acres from leasing but allows for continued research activities, and (3) to defend the Department of the Interior’s fossil energy leasing reforms from proposals to weaken them, through an effective public communications strategy and by engaging a broad array of Western voices.
