Overview
The Joyce Foundation, with support from New Venture Fund, recently established the Fund for a Safer Future aimed at collaboratively supporting research and developing strategies to reduce U.S. gun violence. Since the mid-1990s, U.S. government-sponsored research on gun violence has been effectively banned. The lack of empirical evidence on issues ranging from risk factors for gun violence, to the efficacy of proposed federal and state policies, to gun dealer behavior, hampers efforts at reducing gun violence. With this grant, New Venture Fund, with strategic oversight from the Joyce Foundation and other experts, would fund a series of studies aimed at improving the evidence base to help understand the sources of and, eventually, to reduce U.S. gun violence.

The League is one of few organizations doing narrative and culture change work at scale with a gender justice lens and that has the infrastructure to do this work across a variety of sectors. The Groundwork Collaborative, a fiscally sponsored project of New Venture Fund, is a think tank and advocacy project that starts new conversations on the economy by crafting stories about how the economy works that are accessible, intuitive, and compelling and are told through diverse spokespeople who are credible, plainspoken, and fearless. This grant supports Groundwork Collaborative’s work to grow support for the IRS to modernize its operations, build a direct tax filing option, and demonstrate that a well-funded government can play a critical role in strengthening our democracy.
