for the Community Leadership Project Peer Exchange program
Founded in 2000, the National Community Development Institute (NCDI) (Oakland, CA) is a nonprofit intermediary capacity building organization whose mission is to build capacity for social change in communities of color and other marginalized communities in a culturally-based way. Over three years, NCDI will deliver technical assistance to a cohort of ten to fifteen organizations, with operating budgets of $500,000 or less, that articulate a social justice perspective that guides their work and are eager to learn how to be more culturally competent in organizational management or provision of services. With peer exchange meetings, NCDI intends to address four key problems: (1) the need for more cross-cultural connections amongst nonprofit leaders serving diverse low-income communities of color; (2) the isolation felt by organizational leaders in small and mid-sized nonprofits serving vulnerable populations; (3) the lack of culturally-based capacity building tools and resources; and (4) the lack of asset-based approaches used by nonprofit providers.
