for support of the Governance Lab
This grant will enable the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Governance Lab (MIT Gov/Lab) to develop a doctoral training program, creating a pipeline of scholars trained in collaborative research with practitioners and enabling others to replicate the model. The MIT Gov/ Lab will build on existing work in East and West Africa and expand research-practitioner collaborations to Mexico, Brazil, and Asia. It will experiment with new ways of collaborating with practitioners to identify important research questions and co-producing scholarship. The MIT Gov/ Lab will develop and disseminate tools and templates of its practitioner-oriented research model to use in doctoral trainings and expand its reach through collaborations with other research institutions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
for MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative's climate change mitigation and sustainability work
The MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative aims to limit global warming emissions to protect the planet from the worst effects of human-induced climate change, and promote human prosperity and health around the world. One leverage point in reducing emissions is the re-allocation of capital. This work will provide information on financial institution carbon intensity that would be relevant to organizations in the United States; it will inform the following decisions: choice of investment targets for capital, choice of insurance companies for a range of business insurance services, choice of banks, and choice of investment options for employees in 401(k) retirement plans.
for supporting local NGOs to grow and innovate on the TaRL approach in Africa
Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) is a pedagogical approach that involves evaluating children using a simple assessment tool, and then grouping them according to learning level rather than age or grade. The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and its partner Pratham have extensively evaluated this approach, showing that it substantially raises reading and math learning outcomes. With this grant, J-PAL and Pratham will launch a competitive implementation funding window for local African NGOs. These NGOs will develop and expand locally grounded approaches to TaRL, share innovations with and learn from the TaRL Africa Community of Practice, and support governments considering implementing TaRL.
