Overview
Luna Dance Institute provides comprehensive professional development in dance for nearly 300 teachers. The organization serves more than 15,000 children annually by reaching those with the least access through its Summer Institute for educators, in-school artist/teacher-led dance classes in the Oakland Unified School District, and free classes for children and their families at its West Berkeley studio. This organizational effectiveness grant supports internal capacity building to deepen the organization’s awareness, knowledge, skill, policies and practices around equity, inclusion and diversity. Helping individual grantee organizations develop their internal competencies for equity-focused work will in turn support the nonprofit arts field in the Bay Area to coalesce around common language and best practices for equity in the arts.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
Luna Dance Institute provides comprehensive professional development in dance for teachers and teaching artists, direct dance instruction to children and parents, and advocacy in support of dance education in California. Through its professional learning programs, Luna trains more than 600 educators each year. Its in-school arts education programs serve more than 4,000 children annually at public schools in the Oakland Unified School District, at no charge to schools. The institute also serves about 400 children and families through free or low-cost programming. This grant to Luna Dance Institute aligns with the Performing Arts Program’s Youth strategy through the Program Delivery substrategy.
for board development
Luna Dance Institute provides comprehensive professional development in dance for almost 350 teachers, and serves more than 20,000 children annually by reaching out to those with the least access. It does this through in-school artist/teacher dance classes in the Oakland Unified School District, and through free classes in its Emeryville studio for children and their families who are part of the child welfare system. The in-school goal is to build a comprehensive, standards-based, sustainable dance education program tailored to a specific school site, which requires a three-year minimum commitment by the school. Support of a board development process will strengthen members’ fundraising and public relations skills on behalf of Luna Dance Institute.
for general operating support
Each year, Luna Dance Institute gives close to 350 teachers comprehensive professional development in dance and instructs more than 20,000 children, reaching those with the least access to dance education. It does this through in-school artist/teacher dance classes in the Oakland Unified School District and through free classes in its new Emeryville studio, serving children and families who are part of the child welfare system. The Institute’s goal for each school is to build a comprehensive, standards-based, sustainable dance education program tailored to the site, which requires a three-year minimum commitment by the school.
