Overview
This grant would continue support for the 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic, which offers comprehensive health and family planning services in Bayview Hunters Point, one of San Francisco's most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Bayview has the most cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea among San Francisco teens, a teen birth rate three times that of other areas of the city, and an infant mortality rate among the highest in California. Fifty percent of this community's youths live in poverty. The center focuses on improving their access to services, offering sexual and behavioral information through their peers, and engaging them to serve as leaders in the community and in the agency itself. In 2006, the Foundation was one of the first private donors to support this new clinic. Over the past four years, it has grown to serve over 1,000 unique clients, close to its goal of reaching half the 2,800 eligible local youths.
