Overview
The San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music (SFFCM) is an arts service organization that provides fiscal sponsorship, and educational and networking support for Bay Area chamber music groups, estimated to number nearly 200. While the Hewlett Foundation and other major Bay Area arts funders provide project and operating support to a few chamber groups, the vast majority of local ensembles have budgets below the eligibility threshold for most foundations. To help emerging and small-budget chamber ensembles across the Bay Area meet their artistic, organizational, and professional development expenses, SFFCM has developed a program to provide twenty $3,000 grants annually to this cohort. SFFCM has successfully attracted applicants (90 percent with annual budgets less than $60,000); recruited a high-quality peer review panel with diverse aesthetic expertise; and ensured that the funds reach a wide range of artists. With renewed support, SFFCM would extend this program for another twenty months and increase performance opportunities for chamber musicians.
