Overview
The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy’s (ITDP) mission is to promote environmentally sustainable and socially equitable transportation worldwide. The institute provides policy and technical assistance to local governments for implementing high quality transportation systems and reducing vehicular air pollution and congestion. We recommend renewing general support to ITDP to strengthen their strategies in Mexico, Brazil and China to accomplish Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) improvements, higher integration of biking and cycling, and promotion of pedestrian and transit-oriented urban development. The main expected outcomes of this grant are the construction of additional 210 km (130 miles) of high quality BRT lines in Mexico City by 2015, and additional 20 km (12 miles) per year in Guangzhou after completion of phase II in 2011. Further anticipated results are the construction of 40 km (25 miles) of bike lanes with expected 2,500 riders per day in Guadalajara, and bike parking facilities in 50% the BRT system of Guangzhou by 2011.

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy promotes environmentally sustainable and socially equitable transportation in cities worldwide. This grant supports the institute to make progress toward its goal of replacing high-carbon personal vehicles with low-carbon shared and electric vehicles. Specifically, the institute will work with cities to electrify buses, informal transit, and shared micromobility in China and India. The lessons from this work will serve to inform the development of a global electric bus policy and implementation guidebook.
