Overview
The Great Plains Institute works on solutions that reduce and ultimately eliminate carbon emissions, while strengthening communities and providing greater economic opportunity through creation of high-paying jobs, expansion of the nation’s industrial base, and increased domestic energy independence. Of particular importance is the role that the institute plays in building support for carbon capture and carbon dioxide removal projects and policies in the Mountain, Plains, and Midwestern states. This includes hosting and staffing the 75-member national industry, labor, and NGO carbon capture coalition. In addition, the institute organizes CO2NNECT, the premier annual national leadership event on carbon capture, to elevate policy, technology, and communications priorities.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
The Great Plains Institute accelerates the transition to net-zero carbon emissions to benefit people, the economy, and the environment. Leading with trust, inclusion, equity, and pragmatism, the institute advances strategies that increase energy conservation, efficiency, and productivity; decarbonize the production of electricity and electrify more of the economy; adopt zero-, low-, and carbon-negative fuels and practices to decarbonize whatever cannot be electrified across the other major emissions sectors; and deploy carbon capture, removal, transport, use, and storage to achieve a net reduction of emissions in the atmosphere. for the Conveners’ Network
The Conveners’ Network, a project of the Great Plains Institute, supports state-level planning that leverages federal resources to achieve deep reductions in climate pollution. The network will support states in developing comprehensive plans funded through the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants, which will help states unlock federal decarbonization resources. (Substrategy: U.S. National Policy)
for the carbon management program
The Great Plains Institute’s carbon management program supports the deployment of carbon capture technologies at the scale and pace of deployment that climate science deems necessary to achieve midcentury decarbonization. The institute’s approach supports community engagement with a careful eye to supporting analysis and research on the potential benefits and harms at the community level.
