Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a traditional Balinese music and dance troupe with more than 60 volunteer members. It fosters artistic exchanges between Bali and the United States through an ambitious schedule of workshops, performances, in-school assemblies, residencies, and the creation of innovative new works of music and dance. Reaching more than 10,000 audience members and 2,000 students each year, the organization is known for its ongoing exchange with Balinese masters through its artist-in-residence program. This grant to Gamelan Sekar Jaya advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a diverse sixty-eight-member Balinese music and dance troupe that fosters artistic exchanges between Bali and the United States through an ambitious schedule of workshops, performances, in-school assemblies, residency programs, and the creation of innovative new works of music and dance. Attracting 10,000 Bay Area audience members annually, the organization is also known for its ongoing exchange with Balinese masters, through its artist-in-residence program to train members via the same rehearsal-intensive manner of oral transmission traditionally used in Bali.
