Overview
Freedom House, America’s longest-standing nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting freedom and democracy, was founded in 1941 by Eleanor Roosevelt and Wendell Willkie as a bipartisan voice to counter the isolationist sentiment that swept the country in response to World War II. The organization analyzes the challenges to freedom in its annual publications, advocates for political and civil rights, and supports frontline activists in promoting democratic change abroad. This grant will provide general support to Freedom House as it reorients itself to focus more on restoring U.S. leadership on liberal democracy and its values, and on catalyzing a movement of renewed support for and commitment to those values throughout the nation.

Grants to this Grantee
for general operating support
Freedom House, America’s longest-standing nonprofit dedicated to promoting freedom and democracy, was founded in 1941 as a bipartisan voice to counter the isolationist sentiment that swept the country in response to WWII. According to the most recent Freedom House assessments, democracy in the world has declined for the 13th consecutive year, meaning that its work is as important now as ever. The organization analyzes the challenges to freedom in its research and annual publications, advocates for political and civil rights, and supports frontline activists promoting democratic change abroad. Ultimately, Freedom House seeks to catalyze a movement of renewed support for and commitment to liberal democratic values at home and abroad.
