Fòs Feminista

For Emergency Relief In Haiti

Overview
The Foundation approved $500,000 in emergency response funds to the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Western Hemisphere Region (New York, NY) for relief in Haiti. The effects of the earthquake hitting Haiti have been devastating, leaving one-third of the country's nine million inhabitants in urgent need of food, water, and medical care. In situations of disaster, documentation indicates that women and girls will be hit especially hard. There is an increased risk of sexual violence, sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, and unsafe abortion. The Federation's long-time local partner in Haiti, PROFAMIL, has suffered the destruction of two of its clinics. In partnership with other organizations, the Federation will offer immediate primary health care and sexual and reproductive health services through mobile health units in the cities of Port-au-Prince and Jacmel and rebuild the organization's capacity (New, $500,000/1; $250,000 from Special Projects, $250,000 from Population; 20% of project budget) The Population Program's overall goal is to protect and educate women and girls to provide them choices and safety. In situations of disaster, documentation indicates that women and girls will be hit especially hard. There is an increased risk of sexual violence, sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, and unsafe abortion.
