Overview
This grant would complement other grants aimed at coal plant retirements. It focuses on developing and implementing best practices for natural gas production at the state level and the development of a low-carbon electric grid. The Fund would promote rules in fourteen states to secure better regulatory safeguards for shale gas development and a better understanding of the life-cycle carbon footprint of natural gas compared to coal. It would promote grid reforms in nine states leading to market reforms, technical investments in a smarter grid, and policies that promote greater renewable energy penetration.

Grants to this Grantee
for the China Program to enhance the design of carbon border adjustment mechanism
This grant will support the Environmental Defense Fund’s China Program in promoting innovative climate technology demonstration at the subnational level, and enhancing emission reduction market mechanisms at the national level. (Substrategy: China National Policy)
for agricultural decarbonization and methane reduction in China and along the BRI
This grant supports the Environmental Defense Fund’s scoping study of agricultural methane reduction opportunities in the Global South. EDF will use this project to identify the main levers in China, and within major developing economies, to significantly reduce agricultural methane emissions, both within and across the national borders. This work will unveil in-depth analysis and solutions for three key barriers for agricultural methane mitigation in the Global South: (a) a lack of political will and global momentum, (b) insufficient research and development investments in technical solutions; and (c) insufficient funding and support for deployment and solution adoption in developing countries. (Substrategy: China National Policy)
