Overview
Empower Learning Africa is a nonprofit organization that works to support every child across Africa build foundational skills for a better future through the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) initiative. TaRL is a pedagogical approach that involves evaluating children using a simple assessment tool, and then grouping them according to learning level rather than age or grade. The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and its partner Pratham have extensively evaluated this approach, showing that it substantially raises reading and math learning outcomes. This grant will enable Empower Learning Africa to establish a fellowship program that will create a pool of African leaders to provide locally rooted, nimble support for TaRL programming across the countries where the approach is being implemented.
