Democracy: A Journal of Ideas

Democracy is a quarterly journal and website founded in 2006 as an incubator for new and compelling public policy ideas that promote fairness, economic equality, and a responsive and democratic government. The topics the journal considers central are rising inequality, the breakdown of the ladder of upward mobility, and potential alternatives to decades of neoliberal policymaking.

Democracy Journal will publish a special issue — "Is There Hope for Economics?" — which will introduce educated but lay readers to the burbling shifts afoot within the economics discipline. While individual pieces on topics like monopsony might make it into the New York Times, most people, even experts in other fields, do not yet grasp the extent of exciting and interlocking work that has been released in the past few years. To guide readers through these shifts, Democracy Journal will curate a symposium of about eight essays that will dive into the various fascinating aspects of these shifts. In each piece, authors will lay out the intellectual history of their topic, explain how the assumptions that once undergirded mainstream thinking are being challenged, and why it matters.
