Grants to this Grantee
for construction costs for the renovation of the facility at 80 Turk Street
Since 2007, the Performing Arts Program has funded CounterPULSE (also recommended on this docket for general operating support). CounterPULSE’s lease for its current location on Mission Street in San Francisco will end in 2015, and the organization is actively searching for a new physical home in its Mid-Market neighborhood. This capital grant would provide CounterPULSE with flexible funds that could be used for expenses such as planning, capital campaign implementation, site acquisition, and renovations.
for the 2021 50 Arts Commissions for folk and traditional arts
In recognition of the Hewlett Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions initiative supports the creation and premiere of 50 exceptional works of performing arts. This grant will support CounterPulse in developing and presenting the Indian folk opera “Princess Nautanki” in partnership with lead artist Devendra Sharma and the fiscally sponsored project Devendra Sharma’s Nautanki Folk Opera Ensemble. “Princess Nautanki” will be a multilingual, woman-centered re-imagining of a classic Nautanki production, and will bring this traditionally North Indian and rural art form to Bay Area audiences.
