Grants to this Grantee
for support of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University
The health of our democracy relies upon adapting First Amendment protections to the evolving needs of society, a challenge that will require special vigilance and creativity in this new century. The digital age presents a new set of threats to the freedom of expression and access to information, whether from a government concerned about national security or private companies focused upon consumer privacy. The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University will conduct research, engage in public debate, and pursue strategic litigation for the purpose of preserving broad First Amendment rights. The institute comes into being at a moment when the transition to digital media has left many of the businesses that traditionally went to court to protect these rights without the same level of financial resources to do so. The Knight Institute has been founded to help fill this void just as the need for such advocacy is intensifying.
for support of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s data thematic group
This grant will support the creation of a thematic group on data for sustainable development within the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, based in the Earth Institute at Columbia University. The group of data experts from diverse sectors will identify information innovations for achieving and measuring progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It will provide technical support to national and regional hubs of the Network so that developing country governments can design improved monitoring systems that are relevant to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
