Overview
City Lights Theater Company creates a season of six inventive plays and musicals at its 100-seat venue in San Jose. Through its main stage productions, new play reading series, and summer youth conservatory, the organization reaches 10,000 people annually. City Lights is a national leader in attracting young audiences, with 44 percent of its patrons under the age of 45 as compared to the national average of 17 percent. An Organizational Effectiveness grant will enable City Lights Theater Company to evaluate the feasibility of facility-related capital campaigns, build their understanding of the capacity of their patrons to support their work, and improve their staff’s abilities related to fund development and evaluation.

This grant to City Lights aligns with the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy, helping to ensure that communities in Santa Clara County have access to live productions that engage, inspire, and challenge them.

City Lights Theater Company reaches over 12,000 people annually with a season of six plays and musicals, a festival of new plays, concerts, and a summer youth conservatory. This organizational effectiveness grant supports internal capacity building to deepen the organization’s awareness, knowledge, skill, policies and practices around equity, inclusion and diversity. Helping individual grantee organizations develop their internal competencies for equity-focused work will in turn support the nonprofit arts field in the Bay Area to coalesce around common language and best practices for equity in the arts.
