Overview
The Center for Effective Philanthropy is an anchor grantee in the Philanthropy Program portfolio and one of the premier philanthropy infrastructure organizations in the nation. The Center’s fundamental tenets are highly aligned to the goals of the Effective Philanthropy Group, namely that developing clear goals and strategies, measuring results and providing useful data lead to improved foundation performance and greater impact. The Center has worked with over 200 foundations, including most of the large U.S. grantmakers, and increasingly with funders in other countries. The Hewlett Foundation uses the Center’s flagship assessment tools, the Grantee Perception Report and the Staff Perception Report, and has used the results of both to improve our work across grantmaking program areas. In addition to offering foundation staff and trustees systematic feedback to improve their performance through these assessment tools, the Center also uses assessment data to understand the characteristics of effective philanthropy and shares these lessons in valuable knowledge products for the sector.

for YouthTruth’s Civic Readiness Project
YouthTruth is a national survey project, operated by the Center for Effective Philanthropy, that harnesses student and stakeholder feedback to help educators and educational leaders make better decisions, leading to better experiences and outcomes for students. Today, YouthTruth has surveyed over 2.9 million students and over 700,000 staff and family members across 39 states. This grant will support YouthTruth’s Civic Readiness Project, which seeks to learn from young people’s perceptions to inform philanthropic and school system partners’ efforts to prepare all youth to be civically ready members of society and to support the growth of a healthy, inclusive, multiracial democracy. The project will investigate which groups of youth feel civically empowered – or not – and perceptions of how school experiences promote – or impede – civic engagement.
