Overview
FROM APPLICATION SUMMARY FOR GRANT 2009-4834: A current Hewlett grantee, the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) is a foundation working throughout California to support individual artists. In early 2009 CCI was supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission and San Francisco Grants for the Arts to develop a quick-turn-around means of distributing small grants to artists, employees and volunteers individuals at Bay Area non profits seeking professional development assistance. With project support (and significant support expected from the James Irvine Foundation), CCI will expand this TA program to provide up to 200 $1000 scholarships to emerging arts professionals enabling them to take classes, attend workshops, travel to conferences and strengthen their skills and build their professional networks. This investment, in addition to the creation of a robust database on the region’s emerging arts professionals, will support a program strategy to bolster the organizational effectiveness of our current grantees and to increase the likelihood that arts organizations in the state will have a qualified stream of skilled managers going forward.

Grants to this Grantee
for the California Arts Leadership Investments (CALI) regranting program
Center for Cultural Innovation is a California-based arts service organization that promotes knowledge sharing and skill building. With offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the organization provides monetary grants, technical assistance, and research capacity for innovative projects that improve the practices, policies, and systems of support for artists and the arts sector. The goal of the California Arts Leadership Investments (CALI) regranting program is to enable professional development of artists and arts workers across a leadership spectrum, in order to support equitable change in the sector. Support for the CALI program advances the Performing Arts Program’s goals by boosting the infrastructure capacity of the arts sector in the San Francisco Bay Area.
for the AmbitioUS national initiative
Center for Cultural Innovation is a California-based arts service organization that promotes knowledge sharing and skill building. With offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the organization provides monetary grants, technical assistance, and research capacity for innovative projects that improve the practices, policies, and systems of support for artists and the arts sector. This grant supports AmbitioUS, an initiative to incubate new systems for arts and culture by investing in trailblazers, incentivizing the development of artist-owned enterprises, disseminating information about artists and new economy activities, and building a network of artist-influenced new economy participants. This grant advances the Infrastructure component of the Performing Arts Program’s strategic framework.
for a regranting program for individual performing artists in the Bay Area
The Center for Cultural Innovation, based in Los Angeles with a satellite office in San Francisco, promotes knowledge sharing, networking, and financial independence for individual artists and creative entrepreneurs. To do this, it gives business training, grants, and loans to artists in the field and also incubates innovative projects that can offer them new program knowledge, tools, and practices. A grant to the Center would support regranting to Bay Area performing and media artists as part of its Investing in Artists grants program and also build a working cash reserve for its Creative Capacity Quick Grant program, which reimburses artists and administrators for workshops, conferences, and technical assistance fees.
