Overview
The Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is one of the Nuclear Security Initiative’s anchor grantees. Over the past four years, Carnegie has shown itself to have unmatchable impact on international nuclear policies including successfully negotiating principles of conduct for nuclear power reactor exporters that will allow vendors to hold their competitors accountable for nuclear safety and security. The principles of conduct provide a unique way of increasing the safety and security of nuclear power plants and could dramatically change the industry. Over the next two years, Carnegie’s Nuclear Policy Program will continue to improve nuclear security in the United States and abroad by conducting projects requested by the U.S. departments of State and Defense. These will include private discussions with U.S. and Russian leaders on the next round of arms control negotiations, development of new in-depth understanding of Chinese leaders’ perspective on nuclear issues, and ongoing work with the nuclear reactor vendors to create a secretariat to oversee the continued implementation of the principles of conduct.
