Overview
Founded over 50 years ago, the Foundation Center has a long history of connecting nonprofits to the resources they need to succeed, providing donors with data and online tools they need to be more strategic, and encouraging greater foundation transparency through information sharing. The recent growth of the number of foundations along with an increasing demand for online transparency place high demands on the center’s online data collection tools, which need significant updates. This grant will contribute toward the development of a new online tool that will reduce manual data entry, allow foundations to upload and edit their grant data and profiles, and provide high-quality data more quickly to the field of philanthropy.

Grants to this Grantee
for support of the Foundation Funding for U.S. Democracy website and database
In 2013, the Hewlett Foundation, alongside seven other foundation funding partners, partnered with the Foundation Center, now part of Candid, to develop an online, interactive data visualization tool to map “who is funding whom to do what” in the field of U.S. democracy. The tool is intended to provide a clearer picture of what issue areas and organizations other foundations are supporting, thereby helping to improve philanthropic investment and coordination in this growing field. The beta version was launched in June 2014. This grant will support ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and updates of the tool through 2023.
