California County Superintendents

California County Superintendents represents the state’s 58 county superintendents of schools, as well as the county offices of education staff that provide leadership and services to California’s 1,000 school districts. The organization’s Statewide Arts Initiative helps strengthen and expand arts education for California’s 6.5 million public school students. California County Superintendents uses a regional model to provide professional development services and curricular tools to build the capacity of educators and districts. This grant for its Statewide Arts Initiative advances the Performing Arts Program’s Youth strategy through its Policy and Advocacy substrategy.

California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) represents the 58 county superintendents and county offices of education staff who provide leadership and service to all of California’s 1,000 school districts and 6.5 million students. CCSESA’s statewide arts education initiative, funded by the Hewlett Foundation since its inception in 2006, works to strengthen and expand arts education in California public schools as part of a comprehensive core curriculum. Its county and regional lead model has gained traction throughout the state as an effective way to build learning communities and provide professional development and curriculum tools to educators. Support for CCSESA’s strategic planning efforts will enable them to bring together regional and state leaders in a facilitated process over four days in Summer 2013 to develop key professional development modules focused on infusing the impending Common Core State Standards with the arts.

CCSESA’s statewide arts education initiative, funded since its inception in 2006 by the Hewlett Foundation, works to strengthen and expand arts education in California public schools as part of a comprehensive core curriculum. Its regional lead model has gained traction throughout the state as an effective way to build learning communities and provide professional development and curriculum tools to educators. Renewed support would enable CCSESA to continue building leadership capacity within its networks of county offices of education in order to implement arts in the curriculum, with regional leads in each of California’s eleven regions. CCSESA also intends to keep providing assessment and programmatic support to schools and increasing public awareness of the status of arts education at every level through advocacy efforts, partnership building, and strategic communications.
