Overview
The American Constitution Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001 with a mission to promote the vitality of the U.S. Constitution and the fundamental values it expresses. ACS plans to expand and lead a progressive and diverse legal community dedicated to advancing and defending the Constitution’s fundamental principles of democracy, equality, liberty, access to justice, and the rule of law. Some of ACS’s existing priorities, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, include the enormous problems raised by the specter of racial injustice in our society, advancing new initiatives that provide a vision of law for the 21st century, and implementing key internal and external initiatives as developed in their recent strategic plan.

Grants to this Grantee
for the Anti-Oligarchy Constitution conferences
The American Constitution Society is a progressive legal organization in the U.S., with over 250 student and lawyer chapters across the nation. The Society believes that the Constitution is “of the people, by the people, and for the people” and interprets the Constitution based on its text and against the backdrop of history and lived experience. This grant supports a series of conferences that will use Joseph Fishkin and William E. Forbath's new book, “The Anti-Oligarchy Constitution: Reconstructing the Economic Foundations of American Democracy,” as the starting point for a new conversation about the constitutional dimensions of law and political economy.
for strategic planning process
A grant to the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS) will support its strategic planning process. As ACS approaches its 20-year anniversary, this evaluation will allow them to hire a consultant to oversee the process as they assess their priorities; work toward their short- and long-term goals; define ACS’s role among peer groups; develop changes to its mission, structure, and strategies; and coordinate with their board and staff to implement the plan’s recommendations.
