Overview
Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is both an honorary society that recognizes and celebrates the excellence of its members and an independent policy center committed to multidisciplinary, nonpartisan research that engages experts in various fields and professions to provide pragmatic solutions for complex challenges. This grant will support the academy’s Commission on American Political Economy and the Common Good, which seeks to craft a new set of ideals to guide the 21st-century American political economy. This diverse, cross-partisan, and interdisciplinary commission will offer a unique set of recommendations that offers a path to a new economy, one that incentivizes individuals and institutions to embody a new series of values. Its work will reach academics, journalists, policymakers, and the broader public, creating a road map to a political economy that reframes traditional debates, restores public trust, and reimagines the common good.

Grants to this Grantee
for a project to improve U.S. public higher education
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is launching a three-year project to improve the quality and accessibility of public colleges and universities in the U.S. American public higher education is facing cutbacks in government support, competition from for-profit education providers and foreign universities, and pressures to respond to emerging technological changes. A grant for this project would support engagement of state and federal policymakers, elected officials, university and business leaders, philanthropists, and ultimately the broader public to improve understanding of the challenges, and to support reforms at the state, federal, and institutional levels.
